Trivandrum Beaches
Originally known as the royal state of ‘Thiruvananthapuram’, the Indian city of Trivandrum has numerous tourist attractions, with the most popular being Kovalam beach, located just 13km from Trivandrum. There are three famous crescent shaped beaches nearby, known as Ashok, Lighthouse and Hawa, yet for tourists requiring a more peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, the quieter environment of Shanghumugham Beach has great appeal.
Trivandrum Temples
Trivandrum has a number of ancient temples, which although are not all available to the public, do make fantastic sights. Many are housed in spectacular grounds with magnificent pillars and monumental towers. In particular, the Sri Padmanabha Swamy Temple enables visitors to swim in a holy tank, marvel at its golden statues and shop for traditional masks and local ornaments. It should be noted that non-Hindus are not permitted to enter some temples.
Festivals
Those planning a winter holiday in Trivandrum may be lucky enough to attend the Arattu Festival which takes place in November. This extravagant celebration features a parade of beautifully decorated elephants, as well as an honorary appearance by the Travancore royals. Another notable festival in Trivandrum is the Palivetta Festival, which is based upon the legend of a demon hunter.
Palaces
Trivandrum has a number of dazzling palaces, the most impressive being the Sri Padmanabha Perumal Palace which is just a short journey outside of Trivandrum. This marvellous wooden palace made from wood is the largest in Trivandrum and was built in the 16th century for the royal family. Today, the Sri Padmanabha Perumal Palace is open to the public as a museum housing the stunning heirlooms of the royal family.
