Museums & Churches
There are many museums of interest in Thessaloniki, all giving an insight into the citys' history and culture. Visit the Archaeological Museum, the Byzantine Museum and the State Museum of Contemporary Art, as well as the White Tower Museum and the Ethnological and Popular Art Museum. Don't miss the beautiful Byzantine churches in the city, now on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Archaeological sites
Founded in 316BC, Thessaloniki boasts a rich past which can be seen in the city centre, reflecting its Roman and Byzantine history. From the famous White Tower to the Rotonda, there are many impressive sites throughout the city, including the Roman market and theatre, the Roman Baths, the Palace of Galerius and the Nymphion.
Walking
With lively squares on the waterfront, shaded avenues and impressive architecture, Thessaloniki is a beautiful city to walk around, and is best seen on foot, with wonderful views out across the water and history at every turn. Soak up the atmosphere of this vibrant city, from its thriving university population to the authentic and charming old town, and enjoy the sights and sounds it has to offer.
Shopping
Whether you're window shopping or buying, there are many streets full of charming little shops and boutiques to stroll past, selling everything from the latest fashions to books, jewellery and leather goods. Out of town shopping centres offer plenty of choice, and Thessaloniki is also home to a large and very lively market, selling all manner of meat, fish and produce, as well as hundreds of colourful flowers.
Nightlife & Entertainment
Greeces' second largest city offers a vibrant and cosmopolitan scene, with an endless choice of nightlife and entertainment options. Choose from lively bars and upscale restaurants, to traditional tavernas, ouzeries and authentic bouzoukia clubs. The city also boasts many cinemas and theatres, and hosts the Thessaloniki Film Festival every year, one of the best in Europe.
Beaches
The glorious beaches of Halkidiki are a major attraction in Thessaloniki, with white sandy stretches surrounded by fragrant pine trees and olive groves. Offering both quiet sunbathing and action-packed water sports, a day trip to Halkidiki is a must whilst visiting the region.
