Thassos Things to do
Beaches
As a relatively unspoilt Greek island, Thassos still offers the chance to spend long summer days on near deserted sandy bays and secluded coves. Long sweeping sandy beaches are found around its Aegean shoreline, with the quiet west coast ideal for total seclusion and relaxation. Many beaches are found adjacent to sleepy fishing villages such as Skala Rachoni, providing an authentic Greek experience, a number of quaint tavernas and perfect for an afternoon stroll. The resorts of Golden Beach and Limenaria both have equally scenic beaches and safe swimming along with a good range of tourist facilities and water sports.
Mountain Biking
Thassos is lush and green with abundant vegetation, quite unique for a Greek island, due to its northerly position and so offers excellent surroundings for cycling and mountain biking. Olive groves, pine forests and rugged mountains can be explored throughout the island along with many scenic coastal trails. Many established routes take in medieval monasteries, ancient Greek ruins and traditional fishing villages and a cycling tour is a wonderful way to discover the real Thassos. Bicycle hire and guided tours can be arranged in Limenas and other beach resorts.
Thassos Marble
The world famous pure white marble of Thassos is the island's major export product and has been produced here for over 2000 years. Visit the sites of ancient marble quarries and admire centuries old marble sculptures found in the island museum in Limenas. Sculpture workshops are found in town and offer the opportunity to see local artisans create amazing works of art which are often found in the many specialist art shops in Limenas.
Festivals
The real essence of Thassos tradition and culture can be seen throughout the year in many towns and villages as festivities take place marking religious and pagan events. These range from week long Easter celebrations, cultural events showcasing ancient Greek drama and music and local village festivals which include a fire or rain dance. Always rounded off with a sumptuous feast, celebrations in Thassos are extremely colourful, full of local myth and folklore and are a delight for visitors to witness.
Ancient Greek Ruins
Much evidence of Thassos' glorious past dating back to the 5th century BC still remain across the island and many sights of interest can be witnessed on a short guided tour. The main town of Limenas provides wonderful examples of Greek and Roman history such as the well preserved Acropolis and temples dedicated to Apollo and Athena. Visit the Amphitheatre above the town for stunning views of the surrounding coastline and enjoy an evening performance during summer months or spend time in the Thassos museum which contains an incredible array of artefacts from ancient times. Experience the Thassian unique and rich history which will inform and educate all who visit.
Boat Cruises
Enjoy the clear Aegean Sea with a trip on board on a traditional Greek yacht.
