Tavira Holidays
Tavira Holidays – Attractive relaxed resort and a picturesque town
Tavira is an extremely picturesque town on the Eastern Algarve coast, on the mouth of the River Gilao, 20 miles east of Faro airport. Tavira holidays feature a relaxed historic picturesque fishing port with an appealing atmosphere and relatively restrained tourist resort development. The oldest parts of Tavira have a charming mix of architectural styles, with a Roman bridge, whitewashed stone houses and gardens, 18th century riverside mansions, curious four-sided roofs, ancient walls, a castle and an astonishing profusion of outstanding churches.
Tavira Holidays – Riverside cafes and great Portuguese restaurants
Tavira has an attractive harbour and a beautiful river with its palm trees and shady waterfront cafes. Tavira is still a working fishing port so Tavira holidays offer a superior choice of economical Portuguese restaurants with plenty of locally-caught seafood and fish on the menu. The old market has a nice collection of cafes, shops and galleries, and is a good spot to pick up local craftwork including lace, ceramics and embroidery. There is also a colourful monthly street market. Tavira is beginning to attract golf fans, with at least 2 courses in the area. Quite a lot of entertainment in Tavira is provided in the hotels but Tavira also has a generous selection of bars and at least one disco for a big night out.
Holidays in Tavira – A superb island beach
For a beach at Tavira most visitors choose the superb long broad sandy beach on Ilha de Tavira, which is easily reached by ferry from Tavira or by minitrain from Pedras del Rei. The fine beach on Tavira Island has several pleasant beach cafes, is well-equipped and offers a good mix of watersports. For a more secluded quieter Tavira beach try Cabanas beach or the beach at Barril Island. If you are in Tavira you should take a stroll up to the Moorish castle for fine views. Holidays in Tavira are ideally placed for exploring the lovely surrounding countryside with its orange, fig and almond trees and pretty green farmland. Birdwatchers in Tavira should head to the Ria Formosa nature reserve, a haven for migrating birds. You could also take a trip to the lovely fishing village of Cabanas and the interesting stretch of coast towards Spain or even a trip to the unforgettable Spanish city of Seville. Other popular Tavira excursions include Faro, Mertola castle, Silves castle, Loule and the Monchique Mountains.
