Beaches The island of Syros is blessed with a number of fine beaches along its coastline that offer safe swimming and relaxing sunbathing without the distractions of too much tourism development. Secluded bays are within easy reach and provide family friendly fun and tranquillity and stunning natural surroundings. Beachside facilities and entertainment in larger resorts such as Galissas remain low key and unobtrusive allowing for peaceful days by the sea.
Food Specialities Known throughout Greece for its gastronomic snacks, a holiday to Syros should involve sampling some of the delicious sweets and dairy products available in its tavernas and shops. Halvadopita is a local traditional cake filled with almonds and nougat, alternatively try a tasty pistachio loukoumia. Cheese production is a major industry and visitors simply must sample Kopanisti cheese which is soft and spicy and eaten warm. Even more popular is the Saint Michali cheese which can be found all over the island. Other local specialities worth sampling include honey flavoured yoghurts, delicious grilled octopus and a wide variety of sausages.
Hiking Syros holidays are not just about lazy days on the beach and water sports, as there is plenty of scope for interesting rambling across a wide variety of terrain. Limestone and volcanic rocks, many unexplored caves, rocky coastline and lush wooded areas offer rewarding days exploring the island's natural surroundings. The flora is particularly colourful and varied especially during springtime and there are many endemic species of reptiles and small mammals to be encountered. Churches Visitors cannot fail to admire the sheer number, variety and beauty of the many churches, monasteries and chapels found all over Syros. Greek Orthodox and Catholic churches are located in many town and villages, are extremely well preserved and display wonderful examples of baroque, Byzantine and Greek architecture dating back several centuries. Venture inside and witness priceless icons, manuscripts or intricate medieval woodcarvings. Often sited on a commanding hilltop or a rocky outcrop overlooking the sea, the evocative scenery alone makes a visit worthwhile.
Water Sports Water based activities are less established in Syros than other more popular Greek islands, but there is nevertheless a wide selection of pursuits available in the main resorts. Visitors can practise snorkelling, sailing, windsurfing and kite surfing and with generally clear and calm seas, water sports are safe for all the family and remain popular throughout the summer months.
Ano Syros The medieval town of Ano Syros is popular excursion for visitors and makes for a most rewarding day out. This enchanting town is filled with traditional shops and houses located in a maze of narrow winding streets full of character and beautifully restored architecture. There are a number of ornate churches with the most spectacular being the catholic basilica of San Giorgio which sits proudly on a hill above town. From here panoramic views of the neighbouring islands of Mykonos, Paros and Naxos can be enjoyed along with quite stunning sunsets. Ano Syros has many interesting shops and fine tavernas and is a delightful way to spend a day.
