Sri Lanka Weather - A tropical sunny paradise Weather in Sri Lanka is typically of a tropical nature with consistent high temperatures and relatively high humidity inland. Coastal resorts enjoy hot, dry days with pleasant afternoon sea breezes. The central highlands are delightfully cool with perfect mild to warm temperatures and little variation. The south west coast experiences more rainfall than elsewhere which can be heavy from October to January and the rainfall pattern can involve brief afternoon showers followed by thunder.
Weather in Sri Lanka - Long hot summer days During summer months Sri Lanka weather sees very little rain with constant blue skies and cooling breezes ensure comfortable and uninterrupted enjoyment of sunbathing and water sports. The south can receive intermittent rain during the summer but is rarely prolonged. Daytime temperatures reach an average of 32c which can feel hotter in midmorning but relents as the afternoon breezes arrive. Up to 9 hours of daily sunshine can be enjoyed at this time. In June and July the east coast receives stronger winds especially on exposed stretches of beach, offering ideal surfing conditions, however swimming can be difficult.
Weather in Sri Lanka - A good winter sunshine record The long virtually unbroken spell of summer sunshine ends in October and Sri Lanka weather becomes gradually wetter and cloudy which peaks in December with an average of 350mm of rainfall. Cloud cover can remain for several days although the sun will invariably shine for around 7 hours a day. The north east coast however continues to enjoy relatively fine weather with fewer showers and generally clear skies. Temperatures reach 28c even on overcast days but relative humidity remains high. Monsoon rains in Sri Lanka are rarely severe enough to disrupt a beach holiday for any length of time.
