Sozopol Things To Do

Beaches
Gold Fish Beach, on the road to Bourgas, actually belongs to a campsite but you can pay to get in! It’s very popular with surfers and the beach is long and wide, and the waters are slightly less rough than other beaches in the area. Other local beaches are lined with places to eat and drink, lively and full of holidaymakers. Always take care when taking the kids – the currents off the coast here can be dangerous. Luckily many of the more popular beaches are patrolled by lifeguards.

St Ivan
St Ivan Island is just over a mile away from Sozopol old town, the Black Sea’s biggest Bulgarian island. The island is home to a sophisticated sonar lighthouse and was once the site of a famous monastery, the Holy Virgin. Visit the island via boat, which you can pick up from Sozopol port in the Old Town.

Apollonia Festival of Arts
The Apollonia Festival of Arts has been held in Sozopol since 1984. The Festival is all about showcasing Bulgarian art, preserving tradition, supporting new ideas and visual experimentation.

History & Architecture
Sozopol is an architecture fan’s dream, highly picturesque and small enough to feel intimate. The buildings tumble and lean outwards and inwards giving a lovely organic feel and there are loads of friendly shops and taverns. Head for the Old Town for proper fairytale townscapes, complete with tiny medieval wooden houses; visiting the Old Town is like going back in time.

Buy art and go shopping
Sozopol loves art, they’re very culture-aware and there’s art all around. Try the Bisseris Art Gallery in the Old Town for a start, and see if you can resist paintings of local views, graphics, art, photos and pottery. This is a great place to buy original gifts from Bulgaria. Aside from that, the town offers the discerning shopper a good range of exciting and interesting shops to explore.
