South Africa Things to do

things to do in south africa

National Parks
There is an abundance of national parks in South Africa that offer a huge range of superb wildlife and spectacular wilderness areas. At the public reserves in KwaZulu-Nataal you can spot the big five; elephant, leopard, buffalo, lion and rhino. There is also an amazing array of marine life available and South Africa ranks as one of the world’s top destinations for whale watching.

Hiking
Hiking in South Africa affords some of the most spectacular views in the world. The mysterious dragon mountains situated in the Drakensberg Park holds host to South Africa’s highest peaks.  While hiking in this area you can also witness awesome waterfalls, magnificent panoramas and vertigo inducing gorges. There are camping options provided by KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife or a range of hotel and self-catering options are also available.

Cable Car
The amazing 1087m flat topped Table Mountain is a trip not to be missed if visiting Cape Town. The easiest way up and down the mountain is to take the revolving cable car. The floor of the cars rotate 360-degrees in order to give stunning panoramic views of the mountain. Once there you can eat at the restaurant and watch the spectacular sunset from the upper station.

Scuba diving
Scuba diving in South Africa is particularly exciting. The KwaZulu-Natal coast offers diving among coral reefs and watching the dazzling fluorescent fish while the Cape coast offers the chance to dive to its numerous sunken ships and wreck-diving is very popular here. On the southern Cape, if you are brave enough, you can dive in shark-cages and face the great white sharks. There are many diving courses available such as the excellent course available by Underwater World in Durban.

Spectator sports
Sport in South Africa is a national obsession and there are plenty of opportunities to view some first class sporting action. Soccer, rugby, cricket and horse racing are all catered for and all are performed at world-class level. The colourful Durban July Handicap is a spectacular horse racing event not to be missed, it attracts large crowds, bigger purses and a huge amount of media attention.
