Water sports With its white sandy beaches and warm turquoise sea Sardinia is perfect for all kinds of water sports. Porto Pollo, near Palau in the north of the island offers some of the best windsurfing in Europe, and there are plenty of other locations around the island. Surfers, kite surfers and canoeists will also find equipment hire and excellent conditions.
Scuba diving and snorkelling In the clear waters around the coast divers will find Roman galleys and wrecks of all kinds, as well as colourful reefs, underwater caves, shoals of fish, dolphins and turtles. There are dive centres all around the coast and waters that are suitable for anyone from experienced scuba-divers to beginners and snorkellers.
Sailing and Speedboats Sardinia’s dramatic coastline, secluded coves and idyllic beaches make a stunning backdrop sailing. Winds can be perfect for experienced sailors, but the less skilled should take an experienced skipper. Anyone can enjoy the incredible coastline by booking a speedboat tour.
Cycling Roads are well-maintained with light traffic and hiring a bicycle is a great way to explore the island. Cyclists who are out of practice might like to stick to the coastal flatland as the interior can be very hilly. Off-road biking gives a chance to reach remote beaches and coves and appreciate the rugged coastline in a way that car drivers cannot.
Golf The courses in Sardinia are among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. Both the experienced golfer and the complete beginner will find a welcome on the lush green courses.
Walking and hiking There are walks for all ages and English-speaking guides are available. For the keen hiker the mountain ranges include some of the most unspoilt areas of Europe, while for families the Marmilla table-top mountain offers fine scenery and the chance to see local wildlife.
National Parks The protected areas of Sardinia are stunning and include the high mountains of the Gennargentu National Park, where eagles and falcons soar above; the wild rock and white and pink sands of the Maddalena National Park; the island National Park of Asinara, populated by small white donkeys; and the Molentargius Park with its ponds pink with flamingos.
Festivals Sardinia has a rich history and culture and its isolated position has helped it to hold on to its traditions. The visitor can experience the local culture in the colourful festivals that are held in towns and villages all over the island.
