The resort of Sao Rafael is really a collection of beaches, all with smooth sand, backed by the characteristic sandstone cliffs of the Algarve. The main beach is attractive and fairly large, with a number of arched rock formations along the golden sand, providing much needed shade in the height of the summer. The waters of Sao Rafael are perfect for snorkelling, and the headlands offers some scenic walks. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available, and facilities on the beach include both a convenient restaurant and a café. Just one kilometer along the coast is the stunning little beach of Praia da Castelo, named after the old ruined castle up on the headland, with its’ fascinating rock formations and plenty of shade.
