Areias Sao Joao, located on the Algarve, is a lively resort ideally placed to enjoy both the bustling ‘strip’ of the new town of Albufeira, and the golden sandy beaches nearby. Situated just between the original fishing village of Albufeira and the ‘Golden Beach’ Praia d’Oura, Sao Joao has become a popular family holiday destination, with numerous hotels, villas and apartments to choose from.

Sao Joao, on the outskirts of Albufeira, has a great sandy beach on which to relax, backed by glorious green headland, and surrounded by the coloured sandstone cliffs found throughout the Algarve. All kinds of watersports are available on Sao Joao, with scuba-diving found in the next cove along. The resort is rather hilly, with some steep walks especially back from the beach, but the views from Sao Joao of the scenic coastline are stunning. Nearby Santa Eulalia beach is easily reached, and is worth a trip after dark to visit the largest nightclub in the Algarve, Locomia, situated right on the beach.
Holidays in Sao Joao – At the north end of ‘the strip’
The bustling new section of Albufeira, commonly known as ‘the strip’, is the main commercial centre of the resort, and, crowded and noisy, it caters well to the hordes of tourists who visit. Sao Joao is located at the north end of the strip (with Praia d’Oura at the south) so ideally placed for the nightlife of Albufeira, and the abundance of bars, restaurants and clubs found here. The old town of Albufeira gives visitors a taste of the true Portugal, with its’ cobbled streets and traditional restaurants.
