Santa Lucia Things To Do

Santa Lucia beach is absolutely gorgeous, world-renowned for superb diving and snorkelling along the world’s biggest coral reef. This is an unbroken reef, stretching for almost 14 miles and often visible from the beach only 200m or so from the shore. Because the lagoon in between the reef and the open sea is calm and protected from the tides, the water is always safe. And – if you’re worried about things that sting and bite – it is free from man-eating and otherwise dangerous sea creatures!

Santa Lucia is relatively isolated on Cuba’s Atlantic north coast, a fair journey away from most of the country’s main tourist attractions. So if you’re in Cuba for sightseeing, Santa Lucia probably isn’t the best choice. The nearest town, Nuevitas, is across a large lagoon and consists mainly of hotels plus a couple of suburbs.

 

An hour’s drive will take you to the Camaguey, capital city of the largest province in Cuba, also called Camaguey. Around 350 miles east of Havana, Camaguey has more islands and bays than anywhere in the Cuban archipelago and enjoys almost eighty miles of beautiful beaches.

 

Santa Lucia is surrounded by muddy, pale salt flats and if you’re lucky you’ll see flocks of rare Roseate flamingos feeding on tiny saltwater life there. But watch out for the mosquitoes… take the best repellent you can find even if you’re not usually the type to get bitten! 

 

Santa Lucia’s 13 miles of lovely sandy beach are heaven for water sports fans of all sorts and thousands flock there to enjoy swimming, diving, sailing, yachting, fishing and a host of beach and water-based fun activities.

 

The Cubitas Mountains
From Santa Lucia beach, you can take a trip to the lush Cubitas Mountains; home to some wonderful wildlife, stunning scenery and an amazing 300+ species of plants. Exotic, hot and deep in the middle of the jungle!
