In the heart of northern Italy, between the fashion capital of Milan and the culture capital of Venice, one finds Salo, on the banks of the immense Lake Garda, Italy’s biggest lake. Lake Garda absolutely cannot be missed for any lake holiday aficionado. Salo can be reached through the regional airport of Brescia served by Ryanair or for those coming from further a field there is the international hub of Milan Malpensa, a two-hour drive away.

 

Steeped in history dating back to ancient Roman times, Salo is a picturesque city with plenty to do and an authentic Italian feel. Wander around the sunny cobbled streets and soak up the atmosphere only found on an Italian lakes holiday. Explore the historical treats the city has to offer, such as the impressive Gothic 15^th century cathedral and grand 16^th century palace, Palazzo della Magnifica Patria. Why not sit in an authentic Italian bistro in one of the plazas, watching the world go by, or take a stroll along the promenade and enjoy the stunning views across the lake? The water of Lake Garda is brilliantly clear and in the summer months this is an ideal destination for simply lounging on the beach. A mix of nearby campsites, guest houses and hotels means that Salo caters to everyone’s budget and tastes.

 

Salo makes an excellent base from which to explore the numerous resorts and islands on offer around Lake Garda; the most difficult decision is often which areas one would most like to see with the limited time on offer. The principle resorts around the lake include the pretty medieval town of Sirmione, with the distinguished Rocca Scaligera castle, and Riva de Garda; a picturesque tourist town with stunning walks up into the hills and lots of restaurants and “gelaterias” on the waterfront. On the Western shore of the lake one finds the peaceful town of Gardone Riviera, home to the Andre Heller botanical garden; well worth a visit. Most of the resorts have good ferry and boat services running to the different islands and towns along the lake shore meaning you will never be short of something to do or somewhere to visit on your lake holiday to Salo, Lake Garda.
