Ryanair Increases Baggage Fees

Tuesday, 29 April 2008

ryanair flightsRyanair is to further increase charges for checking in bags as the Irish carrier attempts to encourage more passengers to fly with hand luggage only.

Europe's biggest low cost airline has announced that from 5th May 2008, any passengers pre-booking luggage into hold will be charged €10, an increase of €1. An additional fee of €5 will also be charged to any passengers booking their flight at the airport rather than online - also an increase of €1.

A Ryanair statement revealed that the measures were being put into place to try and change customer habits: “Ryanair encourages passengers to avoid these charges altogether by travelling with our 10 kg hand luggage allowance and checking in online”.

Ryanair’s Head of Communications Peter Sherrard had previously warned that further increases were likely: "These will not be the last increases in Ryanair's checked-in baggage or airport check-in fees, which will continue to increase over time until we reach our objective of persuading at least 50% of all Ryanair passengers to travel with hand luggage only.”
