Punta Cana is a resort area on the Eastern Coast of the Dominican Republic, attracting those looking for the ultimate beach holiday and plenty of lazy days on the idyllic Caribbean beaches. The region of Punta Cana stretches north along the coast for 50km - an amazing expanse of unbroken white sand protected by a long coral reef - and encompasses the areas of Cap Cana, Punta Cana itself, Cabeza de Toro, Bavaro, El Cortecito, Arena Gorda, Macao and Uvero Alto. The developing area of Punta Cana offers a host of all-inclusive hotels to choose from, ranging from couples-only to family-friendly, where the beach is the main attraction, and rest and relaxation, with the occasional water-sport, is the order of the day.

The area of Punta Cana is almost entirely made up of all-inclusive resorts, with access to neighbouring hotels along the beachfront. With white sands and swaying palm trees, the beach is the focus of the area, and with an offshore coral reef stretching for 30km - the longest in the Dominican Republic - conditions in the turquoise waters are perfect for swimming and snorkelling. Punta Cana is known as an excellent place for learning to scuba-dive, with shallow dives featuring interesting tunnels, coral formations and shipwrecks. Plenty of other water-sports are on hand for guests, including banana-boat rides, windsurfing, sailing and kayaking, and numerous boat-trips take visitors up and down the coastline. Punta Cana is also the main area in the region for deep-sea fishing, and regularly hosts international tournaments. During the day the hotels arrange activities on the beach, such as volleyball, and golf, horse-riding and go-karting are all available whilst staying in Punta Cana. The hotels put on regular nightly entertainment, with the restaurants being almost exclusively situated in the resorts, with many of them now offering speciality restaurants, in addition to the famous buffets.

Holidays in Punta Cana suit holiday-makers who are looking for the convenience of an all-inclusive resort. There is not much else in the surrounding countryside, with the nearest town, Higuey, being a 40 minute drive, and the small commercial centre of Plaza Bavaro offering limited shopping. If the lure of the outside does beckon, Punta Cana is ideally placed for numerous excursions in the surrounding area, such as a tip to the Marinarium in Punta Cana - which offers swimming with rays and nurse sharks, nearby Dolphin Island, where visitors can swim with trained dolphins in the sea, and the Punta Cana Ecological Reserve, which offers tours through a real tropical jungle. Further afield is the town of La Ramona, with its' artisan village, Los Haitises National Park and the Tropical Plantation. Adventure tours such as jeep-safaris. helicopter rides, speed boat tours and whale-watching trips are all available whilst staying at Punta Cana.
