The main beach of Puerto Rico is covered with sand imported from the Sahara desert, and despite being fairly small, is fairly sheltered, due to the steep cliffs that surround the resort. Because of the resorts’ popularity, the beach can get quite crowded, so many take advantage of the public area behind the beach home to two swimming pools, set amongst lush tropical gardens, with beautiful plants and flowers. All manner of watersports are available in Puerto Rico, including wind-surfing, scuba-diving, parasailing and jet-skiing. Puerto Rico is also an established sailing centre, its’ bustling marina next to the beach the hub of the resort, full of fishing vessels, luxury yachts and pleasure boats. Behind the harbour is a promenade lined with bars, restaurants and cafes and the resort is a great place for duty-free shopping, with three busy malls. Just 3km along the coastline is the much smaller resort of Playa Del Cura, with its’ sandy beach set in a quiet cove and a much more relaxed pace.

Puerto Rico is one of the busiest resorts on Gran Canaria, with a reputation for all-night partying in the many bars and clubs. There are numerous English-style pubs, serving up beer, football and karaoke, and all sorts of other entertainment throughout the resort, and the restaurants cater mainly to the British contingent, although there are some places serving traditional Canarian fare and Spanish tapas. Away from the beach, tennis, mini-golf and paragliding are available, and Puerto Rico is ideally placed to explore the other attractions of the south coast of Gran Canaria.
