Underwater, the sumptuous hues, easily-viewed shallow reefs and diversity of marine life can’t fail to impress, and the Gran Acerife Maya here, also known as the Great Mesoamerican Reef is one of the largest on the planet. Maya archaeological sites are also in abundance. Make sure to visit Tulum, 100km south, Chichen Itza in the centre of the peninsula, and Coba, 80 km away.
