Prasses is a very small picturesque medieval village set dramatically on a Crete hillside. Holidays here are for those looking for something a little different; a true Crete mountain village with a few local tavernas and limited amenities. This is a superb base from which to explore the dramatic surrounding either on foot or by car. Prasses is just five miles from the important historic town of Rethymnon, in the middle of the north coast of Crete, about 40 miles from Chania and Chania airport. Prasses is a medieval village with typical whitewashed Crete houses, buildings with both Venetian and Turkish touches and Orthodox churches. It is a very picturesque and friendly place with just a few old-style tavernas and bars and very limited shopping. Breaks here are for total relaxation in an unpretentious peaceful village. If a Prasses getaway becomes too peaceful the important historic town of Rethymnon is just 5 miles away; a fascinating mix of architecture with plenty of shops, bars, tavernas and nightlife as well as excellent transport connections.

Holidays in Prasses – A great base for exploration
Prasses is close to the Prassanos Gorge, one of the most famous and beautiful in Crete. The village is something of a gateway to the south of Crete if you have the time to explore the roads leading into the dramatic interior. Walkers, nature lovers and birdwatchers enjoy breaks here for the access to stunning countryside in the gorgeous Amari valley. Roads and paths south of the village lead into the gorge. Prasses holidays have a wealth of interesting excursions: archaeological sites like Eleftherna, Zoniana cave, the monasteries at Aghion Asomaton and Arkadi. A trip through the villages of the interior is a must; places like Vizari and Fourfouras are full of Crete country charm. More ambitious walkers could head for Kouroutes and the walk to Mount Psiloritis.

But you may prefer to spend your time in Prasses enjoying the simple pleasures of the village and visiting the coast. Daytrips here can include visiting the beaches at Aghia Galini, a resort that retains a good deal of its charm with whitewashed houses in narrow streets tumbling down to the harbour, Petres and Georgioupolis, with an incredible beach of sand and shingle that stretches for around 6 miles! The beautiful mile long sandy beach at Platanes is a 30 minute drive away.
