Povoa de Varzim Holidays - A seaside resort on the Costa Verde
Povoa de Varzim, located in Northern Portugal about 25km north of Oporto, is a seaside resort on the Costa Verde. The major resort on Portugals’ Green Coast, Povoa de Varzim was originally a fishing town of great importance to the area, and although the industry is still apparent today, the resort has developed into a cosmopolitan summer retreat, popular with the Portuguese.

The beach at Povoa de Varzim is a 2km stretch of golden sands, ideal for bathing and surfing, with most of the tourist facilities situated at the northern end. Here, many beach-bars and hotels can be found, along with water-slides, tennis courts, a choice of bars and restaurants and the modern casino. At the other end of the beach at Povoa de Varzim is the busy harbour, where the fishing boats still come and go, bringing in the local catch of sardines, sea bream and hake, and seaweed is dried and sold as fertiliser. The harbour is still protected by the 18th century fort, and the town boasts some historic churches and interesting museums. Povoa de Varzim is an attractive town, with the many beautiful gardens and traditional black and white mosaic pavements adding to the resorts’ sophisticated look. A monument to the Povoa de Varzims’ most famous resident, the 19th century novelist Eca de Queiros, stands by the town hall.

Povoa de Varzim serves as a centre for the neighbouring towns such as Espodende and Vila do Conde, and is home to a lively nightlife scene, with popular clubs on the beach front including Buddha and the Hit Bar. The popular casino at Povoa de Varzim offers great entertainment, and is beautifully decorated inside, whilst the restaurants of the town serve up plenty of local fish and seafood dishes, including the regional fish stew, Caldeirada a Povoa. Neighbouring Vila do Conde, is a nice place to visit - also a fishing port, and most famous for its’ beautiful lacework, and delicious chocolates and pastries.
