Porto and The Costa Verde Things to do

porto and the costa verde things to do

Famous Port producers
Portugal’s north-west coastal region, The Costa Verde, is loved for its sandy beaches, gorgeous villages clinging to the hillsides and rich green pine forests and vineyards, hence its name. Holidays here bring you to the heart of Portugal’s Port production region, so while you’re enjoying the sun and surroundings, why not taste some Port and see how it’s made? The town of Vila Nova de Gaia, which faces the city of Porto across the River Douro is home to over 50 Port lodges including Sandemans and Taylors. Here you can enjoy port tastings and tours, and of course pick up some bottles of the delicious fortified wine to take home.

Windsurf
The Costa Verde is known for the great surf and windsurfing opportunities. The wide, spacious beaches draw many water-sports fans to resorts such as Ofir. Here you will find a vast sandy beach, and ideal conditions for snorkelling, water-skiing, windsurfing and sailing. Vila do Conde is also a great windsurfing spot. You’ll enjoy the beautiful, unspoilt scenery too. The coast stretching from Esposende to Ofir and Fao has been classified as a protected landscape area, and is considered to be one of the most beautiful stretches of Portugal’s northern coastline.

Fishing
The Costa Verde and Portugal’s second largest city, Porto, are steeped in maritime and fishing history. Almost every resort began as a fishing village so most seafront resorts offer the chance to watch fishermen bringing in their catches, and of course, the prospect of some amazing fish and seafood cuisine when  you’re ready for lunch or dinner. Don’t miss the fascinating village of Apulia where men in togas still collect seaweed at low tide to sell in local markets. Also Povoa de Varzim, once the fishing centre of the region, is a great spot, and now a cosmopolitan resort with a lively nightlife.

Wildlife of Peneda Geres National Park
Peneda Geres National Park was founded in the north-east corner of Portugal in 1971 and is the only National Park in Portugal. It covers 72,000 hectares and boasts incredible diversity of climate, scenery and wildlife. The park is home to the brown bear, wild otter, royal eagle, wolf and mountain goat. It’s a great place for hiking and learning about the rich flora and fauna of northern Portugal.

Dine in Porto city’s lively old quarter
To get a taste of the real Porto, visit the 'Ribeira', or River-bank quarter. This waterfront area has narrow, winding streets, intricate arcades and shady squares, old-style houses with colourful façades and a timeless ambience. At night, the Ribeira comes alive with great restaurants, bars and nightclubs. It is a great place to eat fantastic local food, and enjoy tasty wines and ports.
