Porto Moniz Holidays - A lively fishing village
A lively fishing village on the most northwestern point of Madeira, Porto Moniz is best known for its' abundant natural swimming pools set in the rocks. Situated in a remote part of the island, Porto Moniz sits high on a hill, amidst some rugged coastal scenery, with a harbour considered to be one of the safest on the north coast. An important wine-growing region, Porto Moniz is also a major fishing centre on Madeira, its' excellent fish and seafood restaurants attracting many visitors.

The drive to Porto Moniz is one of the most dramatic on the island, with the narrow twisting road (nicknamed the Gold Road) carved into the side of the vertical cliffs. The many visitors who make the trip to this remote part of Madeira are rewarded by the wild and spectacular scenery of the north coast. The main attraction in Porto Moniz is the series of natural volcanic pools created by reefs in the coastal lava rocks. These clear shallow pools surrounded by volcanic rocks are great for swimming, and attract both locals and tourists alike. A promenade links the pools to the pier, and the seafront offers such amenities as snack bars, parks and shops.  Visitors to Porto Moniz can visit the Centro de Ciencia Viva, 'The Living Science Centre', a major new scientific and cultural centre, featuring an exhibition centre with a large auditorium and a cyber-cafe. The many hotels in Porto Moniz offer comfortable accommodation with plenty of amenities, such as pools, bars and restaurants and nightly entertainment.

Porto Moniz offers plenty of activities to keep the visitor busy. As well as swimming, the seafront offers diving, surfing, canoeing, and fishing trips. Boat trips around the island are popular, as are organised trips to Funchal, and to visit the famous gardens and museums. Porto Moniz is a good starting point for the scenic nature walks of the area, with the countryside ideal for bike-rides and bird-watching. Travel inland to the plateau at Paul da Serra, reaching up to 1,600m,  and admire the views, or further east along the coastline to Sao Vicente, a coastal town known for its' extensive restoration after a devastating landslide in 1928, with its' elegant manor houses and unusual chapel built inside a cave. Porto Moniz becomes very busy in August, when the town hosts its' annual cattle fair, and attracts many visitors.
