Holidays in Porto Santo
Porto Santo, lying just 39 km northeast of Madeira, is a sleepy island boasting a fantastic sandy beach, moderate dry climate and relaxing tranquil atmosphere. Very different from its’ neighbour, Madeira, which has a lush green landscape, Porto Santo is generally quite barren, with its’ 9km beach the main attraction. Easily accessible from the coast of Madeira, Porto Santo can be reached either by ferry, a 2 hour trip, or just a 15 minute flight from Funchal.

Holidays in Porto Santo – A wonderful 9km stretch of sandy beach
The wonderful sandy beach at Porto Santo stretches for 9km along the coastline, itself divided into separate smaller beaches. Famed for its’ therapeutic qualities, the white sand of the beach at Porto Santo is said to relieve the pain of rheumatism and broken bones, but is, of course, perfect just for relaxing on. The waters are crystal-clear and great for swimming, and the beach has a natural beauty, home to some marine plants and animals. Watersports are widely available on the beach at Porto Santo, including jet-skiing, water-skiing, wind-surfing, canoeing, sailing, diving and fishing, and several bars and cafes on the beach provide convenient refreshment. There is a limited amount of accommodation on Porto Santo, but a few hotels and apartments, some right on the beach, provide a peaceful place to stay.

Holidays in Porto Santo - Peaceful and relaxing
The main town on the island of Porto Santo is Vila Baleira, and offers some attractive cobbled streets, perfect for leisurely strolling around. There is a park in town, and a handful of cafes and restaurants, providing low-key entertainment and serving local specialities. A recent golf course on the island, designed by Severiano Ballesteros, is a welcome addition and also includes a putting green, driving range, pitch and putt course and clubhouse. There are some fabulous scenic walks on Porto Santo, and an interesting visit is to the Casa de Columbus, exhibiting the maps and drawings of the explorer, Christopher Columbus, who lived on the island. Porto Santo can also be combined with Madeira,  to create a relaxing two-centre holiday.
