Holidays in Porches Porches, situated between Alcantarilha and Lagoa in the Algarve, is an unspoilt picturesque village that has become famous for its’ traditional Portuguese pottery. The village, which is located 5km inland from the fantastic beach of Armacao de Pera, is dominated by the pottery industry, with many of the local shops having built-in cafes and workshops attached. The village is an ideal spot for those in search of peace and tranquility, with the great beaches and attractions of the Algarve close by.
Holidays in Porches – Visit the many shops selling local pottery The attractive village of Porches is comprised of white-washed buildings topped with filigreed chimneys, and home to some ancient castle ruins. There are two main potteries producing their own work, the most famous of which being the Porches Pottery Factory, founded in the late 1960’s, specialising in traditional Moorish patterns, and producing the distinctive hand-glazed green and blue ceramics of the area. Visitors can watch the artists hard at work, and there is a huge choice of shops in Porches selling a wide variety of beautiful pottery. The charming fishing village of Armacao de Pera, which boasts the longest sandy beach in Portugal, stretching almost as far as Albufeira, is just a short trip away, and neighbouring Praia de Rocha is well worth a visit. Smaller bays around Porches are great for exploring, and for swimming and snorkelling.
Holidays in Porches – A picture-postcard village The pace of life in Porches is quiet and relaxed, but the village sees plenty of visitors who come for the famous pottery shops of the town. Porches is small and still unspoilt with a small choice of cafes and restaurants, whilst nearby Portimao offers a lively market, bustling port and some good-quality restaurants. Whilst visiting Porches, there are some interesting places to see in the surrounding areas, including the charming village of Alcantarilha and also the town of Lagoa, best-known for its’ vineyards.
