Ponta do Pargo Things To Do

Beach
The beach at Ponta do Pargo is sheltered thanks to the surrounding high cliffs, and is a tranquil spot ideal for quiet relaxation, and blessed with stunning views. Those in search of a sandy beach with facilities and water sports could head further south along the coastline to Calheta.

Walking & Hiking
A haven for walkers and hikers, Ponta do Pargo has access to the network of local levadas that run all around the island. An excellent way to discover the beauty and unspoilt charm of the area, there are routes and itineraries for all levels. Much of the interior is rich with lush vegetation, deep valleys and rugged mountains, and the coastal paths offer fantastic views out over the Atlantic.

Mountain Biking
The trails and levadas can also be explored by bike, and, with plenty of the island inaccessible to cars, this is an ideal way for avid cyclists to travel around the region. Mountain bikes can be rented, and activity tours of varying length are also offered.

Bird-Watching
Thanks to two-thirds of the island being a protected natural reserve, Madeira is a popular destination for bird-watching with 300 species being recorded here. Ponta do Pargo is a good viewing spot due to the region's diverse habitats along the rocky cliffs, the agricultural areas and herbaceous plots.

Golf
There are already two courses on the island - Palheiro and Santo da Serra - however the town of Ponta do Pargo is soon to be the home of a world-class golf course designed by Nick Faldo - due for completion at the end of 2009.

Lighthouse
Built in 1922 and at standing at 312m, the Ponta do Pargo lighthouse is one of the world's highest. The structure boasts spectacular views from the top of the rocky cliffs and is a major historical sight, and home to an interesting museum.

Town
A simple and traditional town, a holiday in Ponta do Pargo offers a taste of rural Madeira, with just a few houses, a village square and a local church with painted ceilings. Local customs and traditions are still very much alive here, and visitors to Ponta do Pargo in September can take part in the famous Apple Festival (Festa do Pero), where neighbouring farmers bring in their produce for celebrations and tastings.

Day trips
Day trips include the fishing centre of Paul do Mar and the sleepy village of Faja da Ovelha. Calheta, the popular sandy beach resort is south of Ponta do Pargo, whilst the town of Porto Moniz, home to natural swimming pools, lies to the north. Visitors on an island tour by car can also take in the capital, Funchal, with its amazing botanical gardens and parks.
