Plakias Things to Do

Plakias beach is an unspoilt, wide sand/pebble bay that exudes a relaxed atmosphere, and is large enough to easily find a secluded spot. Nearby Preveli, or Palm Beach, with its palm fringed river outlet is stunning and is ranked as one of the most photographed beaches in Crete. Holiday makers are only a 10 minute trip from seven amazing beaches in the Plakias area.

 

A wealth of sightseeing attractions is available in and around Plakias. The Mon Preveli monastery and museum is worth a visit to sample some of the area’s history. Boat trips can be made from the harbour to beauty spots such as Preveli Beach and the remote but stunning beaches of Agios Pavlos. A trip to Crete’s third largest town, Rethymnon, will provide plenty of shopping opportunities and excellent seafood restaurants down by the vibrant Venetian harbour.

 

The beaches in Plakias are perfect for numerous water sports. Water sports here can include wind-surfing, canoeing, pedaloes and boat hire. Diving is available through the diving school, and qualified PADI instructors will be able to provide lessons and excursions including cave and night dives.
 

Day trips from Plakias can include the town of Chania, which mixes cosmopolitan restaurants and bars with sightseeing options including traditional Cretan churches, castles, monasteries and vibrant public markets. The amazing natural wonders of the Samaria National Park with its famous gorge, the longest gorge in Europe, should be included in any holiday in Plakias.

 

Plakias night life can include a handful of atmospheric and friendly bars, restaurants, tavernas and even a few nightclubs. The nearby villages of Mirthios and Sellia also offer excellent little tavernas serving traditional Cretan meals. For nightlife with a definite party atmosphere spend an evening in Chania’s first class restaurants and harbour taverns.
