Plakias Holidays

Plakias holidays

Plakias Holidays – Popular with couples, families and walkers.
Plakias is a slowly growing small fishing village on the western side of the south coast of Crete, 20 miles south of Rethymnon and 60 miles south-east of Chania and the airport. This resort will appeal to couples and families. Holidays here are also popular with walkers and admirers of Crete’s natural charms found in abundance in this attractive agricultural area backed by hills and mountains. Plakias is neither tiny nor overly developed and retains a certain simplicity and feeling of remoteness. The town runs alongside the beach on the east side of a broad bay and makes a good base for leisurely exploration of the surrounding beaches countryside.

Holidays in Plakias – Plenty to do and plenty of alternatives

Plakias beach has areas of pebbles and good sand. There is a small harbour for boat trips and cliffs at one end. The beach is big enough to accommodate sunbathers, swimmers, snorkellers and the odd naturist. Plakias beach is safe for swimming and is hardly ever crowded. Breaks here feature plenty of relaxed beach side cafes and tavernas, pleasantly quiet in the evenings when daytime visitors have departed. Plakias is not for those seeking lively nightlife long into the night, but there are a couple of discos. A little effort is rewarded with a coastline dotted with cliffs, secluded rocky coves and sandy bays. Water sports are popular holiday activities here and include scuba diving, snorkelling, canoeing, sailing and windsurfing.

Holidays in Plakias – Beautiful surroundings and hillside villages

If you prefer to stay on dry land there are excellent opportunities to explore some interesting nature trails, olive groves, hills and attractive scenery on foot or by bicycle, and even go birdwatching. Serious walkers could head for the mountains. Established and popular excursions are inland to charming traditional Crete villages with narrow alleys and traditional buildings. Mirthios, Mariou and Sellia are three such villages close to Plakias that deserve a visit. You could also visit the Samaria Gorge, historic sites at Chania and Rethymnon or the Minoan palace at Knossos. Plakias has bus connections, boat connections to beaches from the harbour and even a small train that connects the local beaches.
