Beaches
The uncrowded and unspoilt beaches in Plaka exude relaxation; this is Cretan escapism at its best. Plaka’s coastline is dotted with small coves and bays with stunning views over the Sea of Crete. The sunsets over the Souda Bay, the largest natural bay in the Mediterranean, are second to none. Holiday makers can also enjoy busier beaches at nearby Elouda.
 
Water Sports
The crystal clear sea waters at Plaka beach are perfect for snorkelling and swimming. Other popular water sports here include waterskiing, pedaloes and sailing. Scuba diving is available in Elouda and qualified instructors can arrange dive excursions to 20 of the best dive sites in Crete.
 
Day Trips
Day trips from Plaka can include a trip to the island of Spingola to view the ancient Venetian fortifications dating back eight centuries. The Fortress of Aptera and the magnificent Kournas Lake are also well worth visiting. The cosmopolitan town of Chania is a mere 22km from Plaka and worth a visit for the first class restaurants alone. A trip to Chania will also allow holiday makers to view the Venizelos Graves and the charming Venetian harbour.
 
Sightseeing
Sightseeing in Plaka can include a trip to the beautiful Samaria National Park that is said to hold the longest gorge in Europe. Walkers will be in heaven with the 16Km gorge trip, most of it downhill. Full day cruises from Plaka along Crete’s north coast to points of interest such as Agios Nikolaos and Istro are also available. A trip to the majestic White Mountains will provide nature lovers with many photographic opportunities.
