Philadelphia Weather

Philadelphia, the largest city in Pennsylvania, lies in the south-eastern region of the state, close to the New Jersey border. Known for its cold winters and hot humid summers, the best time to visit Philadelphia is during the spring and autumn months, when the weather is warm and dry, and conditions are ideal for sightseeing and touring.

 

Spring sees temperatures of 17C in March and around 7 hours of sun each day in Philadelphia, with May rising to 23C and June experiencing highs of 28C, and 9 hours of daily sun. There is little humidity at this time, and conditions are ideal for walking round and exploring the city. Summers start to get hot, with July reaching 30C and the humidity rising to an uncomfortable level in August, making the city very hot and sticky. Night-time temperatures in Philadelphia hover around 0C - 5C in the spring, and rise to 19C during the height of the summer. Rainfall is fairly even throughout the year, with a monthly average of 93mm, and July being the wettest month, seeing 111mm. A late summer can often see heavy thunder storms in the city. September and October see very pleasant temperatures of around 19C - 25C, with around 7 hours of sun.

 

January and February are the driest months in Philadelphia, receiving less than 75mm of rain each, but are also the coldest, reaching highs of 3C and 5C respectively. There is still around 5 - 6 hours of sunshine each day at this time. The city does get snow in the winter, and sees an average of 500mm each year. Night-time temperatures can drop to below freezing, with January and February often seeing lows of -4C and -5C.
