Perachori Things to Do
Beaches
Beaches can be found around Kioni – all have equally beautiful views across the Ionian Sea. The turquoise waters are ideal for swimming and snorkelling when it’s time to cool down. For more secluded beaches, small boats can be hired and many tiny coves with trees running down to the water’s edge will reveal themselves. For a busier beach, with a greater variety of water sports such as windsurfing and diving, try taking the ferry to Kefalonia with its expanse of white sand.
Walking
A holiday in Perachori (also known as Perahori) would not be complete without taking the opportunity to explore the spectacular scenery to be found on Ithaca. Whether a gentle stroll or a more energetic hike is your style, there is something for everyone. Mountain tracks will take you to Paelochora, the ancient capital of Ithaca, or perhaps a visit to the monastery of Taxiarchon with its superb views.
Out & About
Perachori is set high on the mountain of Petaleiko looking down on the main harbour of Vathy. It is an agricultural village that produces most of the local wine found on Ithaca that is served in all the local tavernas. Travelling further around the island will mean hiring a car or taking a taxi, but this will be worth it as the joys of a holiday to Ithaca reveal themselves: the beautiful fishing village of Frikes, the wonderful horseshoe bay at Kioni or a trip to explore the ruins of the Castle of Odysseus and the Cave of Nymphs. Most people will want to visit Vathy, even just to look round the largest settlement on Ithaca. From Vathy there are many boat trips and ferries that go to Kefalonia, mainland Greece or simply around the many satellite islets around Ithaca.
Local Festivities
A wine festival in Perachori takes place in August and in June and July Kioni has its festivities with locals arriving in their fishing boats. With live music and dancing and with tourists assured of a warm welcome from the locals these are not to be missed.
