Weather In Oporto - Plenty of sunshine
Not only does Oporto enjoy long, hot summers, but spring and autumn tends to be warm and pleasant with plenty of sunshine. The surrounding Costa Verde, or Green Coast, looks particularly attractive in spring when a spectacular display of flowers appears and contrasts with the lush green hills that give the area its name. Of course, for the area to be so green, there does have to be plenty of rain, and most of this falls between November and March – although winters are still mild. Anyone looking to combine a visit to Oporto with a beach holiday should find almost unbroken sunshine between June and mid-September with temperatures ranging from 23° to 25°C.

The summer heat in Oporto is tempered by the Atlantic, the humidity rarely rises above moderate and sea breezes make it a perfect destination for a city break or beach sun holiday. On rare occasions, a heatwave can set the temperature soaring to as high as 38C. There may also be an occasional cool, rainy period in summer, with strong winds, but it shouldn’t last long. Most days will be hot and gloriously sunny with an average ten hours of sunshine each day in June and August and eleven in July. Although the season is shorter here than the Algarve or destinations further south, the temperature still averages 24°C in September. 

Spring and autumn in Oporto tends to be more stable than the summer and, with little chance of a heatwave to make the streets uncomfortably hot, either season can be an excellent time to visit the city’s attractions or take a cruise on the River Douro. With average temperatures reaching 19ºC in April and 21ºC in October, and plenty of sunshine, the weather should be more comfortable than high summer for exploring and activities such as climbing the 240 steps to the top of the city’s iconic landmark, the Torre dos Clérigos.
