Beaches
Ochi Rios is a perfect location for exploring the beaches and coves along this 16-mile long stretch of coast. Mallard’s Beach is in the centre of town. Turtle Beach is popular with locals. James Bond Beach is so-called because it is near Ian Fleming’s island home. Dunn’s River Falls has a beach at the foot of a waterfall.
Water Sports
As well as sea and beach activities on Ochi Rios, such as snorkelling, jet skiing, banana boating, parasailing, water skiing, windsurfing and sailing, adrenaline junkies can try tubing or kayaking on the Great River.
Scuba Diving
The warm clear Caribbean is excellent for diving. There are lessons for beginners and dives for the more experienced with reefs, chutes and wrecks all within easy reach. Sea-life includes Creole wrasse, barracuda, parrot fish, turtles, scorpion fish, nurse sharks, moray eels and incredibly beautiful corals.
Dunn’s River Falls & Park
The stunningly beautiful 180 meter Dunn’s River Falls are shaded by rainforest and fall directly into the sea. Visitors are invited to climb up behind a guide, and can stop off to enjoy a natural ‘power-shower’.
Dolphin Cove
An idyllic location where you can swim with bottlenose dolphins, feed sharks, snorkel alongside (barbless) stingrays, take a jungle walk among exotic birds and reptiles, captain a mini-boat, take out a glass-bottomed kayak, be entertained by a show and learn about the area’s incredible sea-life.
Boat Trips
Choose between charters or tours, glass-bottomed boats, sunset cruises, outings to deserted beaches and fishing trips with a chance to catch marlin, barracuda, tuna, kingfish and wahoo. Also recommended are the guided raft tours down the breathtakingly beautiful White River.
Other Activities
Nearby activities include tennis, golf, hiking and jeep safaris, helicopter rides, mountain biking, and horse riding tours – which end with a bareback ride in the clear Caribbean Sea. Ochi’s harbour is a stop-off point for Caribbean cruises, which means it’s probably the best place in Jamaica for duty-free souvenirs and jewellery.
Other Sights
Ochi is well placed for visiting Shaw Park Botanical Garden, with its spectacular sea views, colourful blooms, lush greenery and cascading waterfalls; the Brimmer Hall Estate, a working plantation with an 18th century colonial house; and the Green Grotto Caves, where there’s an underground lake you can enjoy a boat ride on. A drive through mountain scenery takes visitors to Nine Miles, Bob Marley’s birth and burial place, where there’s a museum and chapel dedicated to the reggae legend.
Nightlife
There’s plenty of entertainment in the hotels and resorts, with cabarets, live bands and beach parties, but there are also very good clubs, restaurants, sports bars and live music venues around town. And the infamous Hedonism III club is less than 20 miles away.
