It is expected that the opening of the New Acropolis Museum will provide a boost to Greek tourism when it opens towards the end of the year. The new Museum, which has cost €13 million to construct, will exhibit 4,000 artefacts within 14,000 square meters of exhibition space. Tour operators who specialise in Greece holidays are now considering increasing their presence in Athens to take advantage of the expected popularity of the New Acropolis Museum. Planet Holidays managing director Mathilde Robert believes that the Autumn opening of the museum would increase visits to Athens – a city in which they feature a “handful” of luxury properties.
Mathilde Robert added that cultural tourism is growing in popularity, “We are seeing an increase in those looking to combine their break in the Greek sunshine with a few days of cultural enhancement. More and more families are looking to combine their traditional holiday with one that provides some learning too.”
Abhi Dighe, managing director of the UK's number one Greek specialist Kosmar Holidays said that Athens would appeal as they look to expand their programme: “As the leading tour operator to Greece we too are excited by the news and updates regarding the opening of the New Acropolis Museum.
“Our clients staying in the Peloponnese are more likely to visit the city and its antiquities on day excursions but in the future we may look to add Athens in our programme as an add on to island holiday breaks and maybe in its own right too.”
