Nessebur Old Town
The Thracians founded their city here over 3,500 years ago. Since then Nessebur has been home to the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Bulgarians, Crusaders and the Turks, and each has left their mark. The Old Town stands on a peninsular with its famous C18th windmill standing guard over the narrow isthmus that attaches it to land. Nessebur is probably best known for its churches – there were over forty at one time and many of which are still standing, some extremely well preserved and dating back to the 10th-14th centuries. These magnificent Byzantine structures are set amongst a maze of cobbled streets and wooden houses and it is easy to see why UNESCO made Nessebur a World Heritage Site in 1983. A visit to the excellent Archaeological and Ethnographic Museums will explain more about this incredible town and the surrounding area.
