Nassau holidays - sunny heart of the Bahamas
Nassau, on New Providence Island, is the capital city of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. Holiday visitors flock here to enjoy the upbeat sophistication Nassau has to offer. Nassau holidays are fun and highly sociable. There are luxury hotels and apartments at Nassau, lively nightlife, fascinating history, shops, museums, a wonderful harbour and stunning beaches nearby. A holiday in Nassau will place you in the heart of the Bahamas - an archipelago of around 700 stunningly beautiful islands set in the warm, life-teeming waters of the Caribbean. Nassau, and the more northerly city of Freeport on Grand Bahama Island, are the main population centres of the Bahamas. Elsewhere you will find quieter towns and beaches to enjoy a different taste of these unique islands. Nassau International Airport is 16 km (10 miles) west of the city.

Nassau holidays - learn about rum-runners, pirates and boot-legging
Nassau is steeped in the rich history of the Bahamas. Ever since the days of Christopher Columbus, its been known for its shallow waters, reefs and caves, and ideal strategic position for trading, smuggling and wrecking. Nassau was run by notorious pirates in the 17th century, was home to cotton plantations in the 18th century and was a hotbed of bootlegging in the early 20th centre when the USA introduced prohibition. Today the city of Nassau offers many sites of historic interest. Imposing colonial buildings such as the Public Buildings and the Public Library make a great backdrop to bustling street markets and popular fish restaurants. Fort Charlotte is well worth a visit, not least for its grim torture chamber, and the Nassau Botanical Gardens and Ardastra Gardens also quite rightly draw the crowds. For family fun close to Nassau, head to Coral World marine observatory, said to be the world’s biggest man-made coral reef.

Nassau holidays - beautiful beaches and excellent water sports
Around Nassau you and your family can bask on white sandy beaches, swim in crystal clear, shallow water, and enjoy wonderfully warm semi-tropical temperatures. From the resort hotels of Nassau there are also plenty of water sports to choose from when you tire of lounging in the sun. Snorkelling, windsurfing, scuba diving, jet-skiing and the latest extreme water sport kite-boarding are all on offer. Glass bottomed boats give visitors to Nassau a glimpse into the colourful underwater world of the Caribbean. A family holiday in Nassau won’t fail to disappoint.
