Historic Sites
The Campania region of Italy is teeming with historic sites, most notably Pompeii. Destroyed by the volcanic ash that preserved it so remarkably in AD79, Pompeii provides a detailed glimpse into the life and times of ordinary people living in the Roman Empire and visitors can spend many hours exploring the excavated streets. A lesser known and slightly less crowded site, Herculaneum, is also not to be missed.
Mt Vesuvius
A holiday to Naples is not complete without a trip to one of the Europe's most famous natural attractions, Vesuvius. The only active volcano on mainland Europe, Vesuvius was declared a National Park in 1995 and is omnipresent over Naples. You can walk right up to the gently smoking crater of this 4000ft volcano.
Museums
The Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples is the perfect complement to a visit to Pompeii, as it contains fascinating artefacts from the preserved city and similar sites.
Cathedrals & Churches
Hidden amid the teeming and cheerful streets of Naples are ancient churches and glorious classical Italian architecture. The main 13th Century Cathedral is filled with dramatic frescos and contains a holy vial of blood, said to be that of St Januarius.
Food
If you like Italian food, then a holiday to Naples will be a trip to remember. Be astounded at the endless range of delicious pizzas available (invented in the city) and spend some time in the busy food markets for fresh fruit and seafood.
Bay of Naples
The city of Naples overlooks the outstandingly beautiful Bay of Naples. The turquoise waters lend themselves to boat rides along the coast. The islands of Capri, Ischia and Procida are located here. Ischia boasts a fabulous and little known sandy beach, perfect for kids and adults alike.
Explore the Almalfi Coast
Naples heads the stunning Almalfi Coast, where pine forests and villages rich with citrus fruits cling to the rugged, plunging cliff sides. To hire a car and drive down the winding coastal roads through the Neapolitan Riviera is a spectacular experience, with stunning views of the deep, calm waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Take a daytrip to the beautiful villages of Positano and Ravello.
