Weather in Montenegro
Despite being one of Europe’s smallest countries, Montenegro has three climate zones: coastal, continental and mountain. Lowland and coastal areas enjoy mild winters and long, hot, sunny summers with average temperatures climbing to 30°C. With sea temperatures reaching 27°C, it is the ideal location for anyone looking for a beach or water sports holiday. Away from the moderating influence of the Adriatic, July/August temperatures as high as 33°C are common in the capital, Podgorica, in central (continental) Montenegro. The mountain areas, with their sub-alpine climate and forests, clean rivers and beautiful lakes, provide an idyllic refuge should the mid-summer heat elsewhere prove too much.
Montenegro weather - Long summer days, perfect for a beach holiday
Montenegro basks in 10-12 hours of sun each day in summer and has around 240 days of sunshine over a year. With 45 miles of beaches, ranging from broad white stretches of sand to hidden coves that can only be reached by boat, it really is a dream destination for beach lovers and watersports enthusiasts. There’s plenty of summer sun in the mountains too, where maximum average summer temperatures are 23°C, but it can be chilly in the evenings. Rain does fall in the mountains, but there is little rain along the coastal and low-lying regions in summer, with the occasional showers being short-lived. Most rain falls between October and February, December being the wettest month.
Weather in Montenegro - Winter skiing and spring and autumn sun
With its lush vegetation and mild climate, Montenegro can be very enjoyable in spring, particularly for sightseeing and activity holidays, and autumn, when there’s still plenty of sun and the sea stays warm – an average 20°C in October. In winter the northern mountains are covered in snow, which tends to last due to low evaporation and temperatures falling as low as –8C°, and this stunningly beautiful area becomes a playground for skiers and winter sports enthusiasts.
