Holidays in Mellieha Bay – The largest sandy beach on Malta The beach at Mellieha Bay – Il Ghadira, named for the natural sandbank lying just 100m off the shore - is one of the most popular on Malta. The largest sandy beach on the island, Mellieha offers shallow waters and a vast expanse of smooth golden sands, and the presence of life-guards make it an ideal spot for families with children. Watersports are available on Mellieha Beach, including water-skiing and parasailing, with fun activities such as banana boat rides and pedalos on offer. A good choice of beach bars and restaurants line the beach and some large hotels sit back from the seafront.
Holidays in Melleiha Bay – A quiet picturesque beach resort The village of Melleiha lies 1km inland from the beach, up quite a steep hill, and is home to more hotels, a good choice of restaurants and some interesting shops. Mellieha has a good number of historical buildings, with an attractive 19th century Baroque church in the village centre. Regular ferries depart from Mellieha over to the island of Gozo, and frequent buses travel to the capital, Valletta. Children will enjoy the Popeye Village located here in Anchor Bay, and there are plenty of family-friendly things to do down in the busy resort of Bugibba. The main festival in Mellieha takes place over two weeks starting on September 8th, and involves lots of concerts, fireworks, folk-singing and the religious parade.
