Holidays in Maleme – A simple quiet resort on the north coast Maleme is a simple unsophisticated place with a long beach. Holidays in Maleme are for couples and families who want a quiet, relatively undeveloped low-key resort with a calm beach and beach front area. Maleme is at the western end of the north coast of Crete, 10 miles west of Chania and just over an hour west of Chania airport. Maleme runs along the coast road and is backed by green hills, olive groves and citrus plantations with mountains in the distance.
Maleme holidays – For a beach without the crowds With its modest collection of tavernas and bars holidays in Maleme inevitably centre on the beach with is a long curving stretch of fine pebbles, good for swimming and with water sports like windsurfing and waterskiing available. Maleme holidays do not have to cope with crowds as its beach is a lot less busy than those at nearby Aghia Marina, Platanias and Gerani. A scattering of local shops, tavernas, bars and even a disco or two are found around the western part of Maleme beach but those looking for a bit more action should head for Platanias 2 miles along the coast.
Maleme – Ancient sites and war memories Maleme has regular bus connections to Chania to the east and Kastelli to the west. Maleme holiday excursions could include walking and cycling trails, the historic resorts of Chania and Rethymnon, the ancient Minoan palace at Knossos and the archaeological museum at Heraklion, but most people on holiday in Maleme stick to the uncrowded beach. Maleme is famous as the landing point for the German invasion of Crete and has a well-known war cemetery.
