Food and Wine Malaga restaurants are far more authentic than most Costa del Sol beach resorts. Try tapas, raciones, marisquerias, gazpacho, a cheap wholesome menu del dia and famous Malaga wine in famous old-fashioned Malaga bars like the Antigua Casa de Guardia. Plenty of charming traditional bars in the narrow streets of the Moorish influenced old city.
The Beach Suburbs Malaga has long, pleasant beach promenades. Stroll to Malaga beach suburbs like El Palo and Pedregalejo for some excellent unpretentious bars and authentic restaurants. In El Tintero on El Palo beach, waiters circulate shouting the name of dishes until someone flags them down! Great fun.
Picasso The great artist was born in Malaga. Over 200 works in the Picasso Museum in the beautiful Palacio de Buenavista.
Hire a Car Malaga car hire is worthwhile for the mountains alone. Virtually any small road inland very rapidly reveals surprisingly dramatic mountain landscapes, charming mountain villages and unpretentious towns like Alhaurin El Grande. Torremolinos and Marbella are great fun for entirely different reasons, while enjoyable Nerja to the east is immensely popular with the British.
Promenade Join the locals with a typical late-afternoon stroll along Malaga’s extensive promenades. People watch at the stylish marina and sample well-known Malaga beaches like Playa de las Acacias.
Ronda and the White Villages The mountains inland from Malaga are famous for the “pueblos blancos”, white villages and towns in superb locations. Don’t miss Ronda, a beautiful town in a dramatic mountain gorge setting and an exciting train ride from Malaga. Visit the incredible Chorro Gorge and rewarding Malaga national parks like the Parque Natural Montes de Malaga and El Torcal.
Great Andalusian Cities Longer Malaga excursions include three of Spain’s most memorable cities: Granada, Seville and Cordoba. Fans of the bizarre might enjoy a trip to Gibraltar.
Nightlife Malaga nightlife is easy to find as a great deal of socialising goes on in the streets and squares. Malaga nightlife is authentically Spanish and continues through the night. Look out for the local flamenco scene too.
Festivals Visit Malaga at Easter and you will witness one of Spain’s most impressive religious celebrations. Malaga summer festivals include music and cinema.
History Visit a Moorish palace and castle: the Alcazaba and the Gibralfaro. Also the site of a Roman theatre. Malaga also has a notable cathedral.
