Makriyalos Things to Do

Makriyalos beach is famed as the longest beach on Crete’s sun drenched east coast. This immense stretch of white sand and crystal clear warm waters is popular but still retains a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere. Makriyalos beach has been awarded a Blue Flag status but there are also four other beautiful beaches to enjoy in the Makriyalos area.

 

Makriyalos attractions can include boat trips to Koufonisi Island to sample some stunning beaches or a trip to Kapsa Monastery and the traditional ancient villages of Skinokapsala and Orino. Energetic holiday makers can make the trip to the 1500 metre Afendis Stavromenos mountain summit that provides stunning panoramic views over eastern Crete. Make sure to visit the lively street market that opens every Friday just beside the harbour.

Day trips from Makriyalos can include the village of Agios Stefanos to view the public observatory and art workshop or a hike through the stunning scenery at either Pefki Gorge or Butterfly Gorge. The nearby town of Ierapetra holds a wealth of delights around every corner. From bustling tavernas and restaurants in the old town to famous beaches such as Myrtos and Makris Ghialos. Ierapetra is also the starting point for boat trips to Chrissi Island and Vai beach.
