Regular buses run along the coast. Favourite excursions include ancient sites and charming inland villages like Pefki and Lithines, where you will find more old-style tavernas. Ierapetra is an interesting neighbour whose Old Town has narrow lanes and an interesting mix of architecture and monuments, testament to the town’s strategic importance to Romans, Turks and Venetians who have all occupied this the southernmost point of Europe.
