In Madeira, the port of Funchal will undergo a renovation in order to capitalize on the rapid growth in the cruise holiday market.
This month, the port will increase its capacity, something that will help to improve tourism on Madeira. Infrastructure work will include the construction of a special station for international passengers, a dock for regional passengers, new parking areas, footpaths, cycle paths, extensive green areas, commercial and restoration areas and support services for activities of cruise tourism
Madeira has grown as a cruise destination over the past decade and Funchal has become the busiest Portuguese port for cruise holidays, a total of 264 cruise ships carrying a total of 337,601 passengers arrived in 2007.
