Weather in Madeira Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, Madeira is closer to Africa than Europe providing the island with a distinctly subtropical climate. A relatively high level of rainfall gives Madeira its inviting, green shades and lush foliage. With warm temperatures throughout the year, Madeira is a perfect holiday destination whatever the season. An average temperature of 24 degrees in the summer months and a very pleasant 20 degrees in winter, Madeira is worth considering whether you are looking for a relaxing beach holiday under the sun or as a slightly cooler destination for walking and exploring in the winter.
Madeira weather Enjoy year round sunshine and make the most of the beautiful beaches. In summer the temperature can reach into the low 30s when the 'Leste' eastern wind blows in from the Sahara but this only occurs for a few days every year and with the cooling waters of the Atlantic on hand the heat is rarely a problem. In fact, the high average temperatures in Madeira mean that a beach holiday is an option all year round. Rainfall levels are relatively high due to the sub tropical climate so to avoid wet weather, June through August are the best bet. Fortunately, the sea temperature remains mild year round averaging 22 degrees in summer and 18 in winter.
Weather in Madeira The weather on the island can fluctuate depending on region due to the effects of a number of microclimates. For example, the bay of Funchal is something of a suntrap as it is protected by high mountain peaks. Further down the west coast the towns surrounded by lower hills tend to get more hours of sunshine but don't enjoy as much protection from the sea winds. It is quite possible to experience a dry, hot day on one side of the island and get caught in a brief rainstorm elsewhere. The weather patterns on Madeira are as fascinating as the island itself.
