Machico Weather

The lively harbour town of Machico boasts a sub tropical climate with an abundance of year round sunshine. Machico has a close to perfect climate. The ocean does moderate the temperature so that it is never too hot or too cold. The average annual temperature in Machico is a warm 24C and even winter temperatures will stay around the 20C mark. Sunshine levels are high with eight hours per day during the summer and five hours per day during the winter. The winter season will see some rain but from May until September the skies are usually cloudless with very little rain.

Machico’s close proximity to Africa means that the climate is always sunny and warm no matter what time of year holiday maker’s visit. July through September is the hottest period of the year when temperatures head over the 25C mark. The ocean temperatures fluctuate little throughout the year and are a warm 22C during the summer months; perfect for swimming and snorkelling. Temperatures can reach higher than 30C at certain times of the year when the Leste blows in from the Sahara for a few days every year.

Outside of the summer months there can be rainfall in Machico, particularly during the winter months. Rainfall will usually be short lived and will not dampen the warm temperatures. Surfers will love the autumn and winter months as the waves in the bay are exceptional. Spring and autumn months are popular with holiday makers who prefer slightly cooler temperatures of around 20C. There may be a slight chance of rain during these periods but they should not last long enough to spoil any holiday. The weather in Machico, and in other areas of Maderia, will be perfect for those who love hot sunny weather but not as intensely hot as found in other Mediterranean countries.
