A compact and pedestrianised city centre means that holidays in Lucca are easy to get around, and a delight to discover. Lucca holidays are dominated by the imposing and well-preserved thick stone wall that was built in the 1500's, encircling the entire city. Still standing today, the medieval wall now  serves as a promenade lined with shady trees, which runs for over 4km around the city centre. A holiday in Lucca is best enjoyed on foot or on a bicycle, and walking or riding along the famous paved wall is considered the best way to see the city with its medieval streets, lanes, churches and palaces. Interesting places to visit whilst on holiday in Lucca include the Duomo of San Martino, the Church of San Michele and the Piazza of the Amphitheatre, and the city offers some fine museums and historic towers. The main city street, Via Fillungo, is full of wonderfully elegant shops, and the antique district and numerous markets make holidays in Lucca a great place for browsing and shopping.
