Lixouri – Unpretentious coast town base
Lixouri is the second largest town on Kefalonia with a population of around 3000. Lixouri holidays are set in a friendly prosperous modern working port on the east side of the Pari peninsular directly facing the capital Argostoli which is connected by regular ferry. Lixouri is 25 miles from the airport. Lixouri holidays will find most of the life of the town concentrated on Platia Petritsi, the main square and the social hub of the town, which is lined with cafes, bars and restaurants. The waterfront promenade is another focal point of the town. Only a couple of the original Venetian mansions survive, the best-known being the Lakouatos Mansion Museum. Lixouri holiday nightlife is based around the local tavernas and bouzouki clubs, though there are a couple of discos out of town.
Lixouri holidays –Uncrowded red sand beaches
Lixouri beach is practically non-existent but holidays in Lixouri tend to use the town as an unpretentious base from which to explore west Kefalonia and avoid the crowds, especially on the string of uncrowded beautiful famous beaches nearby. Lixouri holidays can explore Lepeda beach with golden sand, shallow water and a monastery. The famous 2 mile long beach at Xi with its fine red sand and cliffs is close. The tiny island of Vardiani can be reached by rowing boat from Xi beach. Another good red sand beach Mega Laxos is 3 miles to the south west of Lixouri. Secluded Petani beach is great for sunsets. There are some limited watersports in the region.
Holidays in Lixouri – Out onto the peninsula
The peninsula has some relatively unknown small fishing villages like Mihalitsata and Ankrotiri. Hillside villages like Havrati and Mihalitsata have fine views. All this area can be easily explored while on holidays in Lixouri. Lixouri holidays should include trips into the surrounding mountains to discover isolated monasteries and unspoilt inland villages and the ruins of the ancient town of Pali at Palaeokastro. Lixouri peninsula is an agricultural area with olive groves, fruit trees, and vineyards, sheep and goatherds. Popular Lixouri day trips include the wonderfully picturesque resort of Assos and the cliff monastery at Kipoureon.
