Holidays in Las Palmas – Two great city beaches Las Palmas has two wonderful sandy beaches on its’ doorstep. Playa de las Canteras, the first tourist resort on Gran Canaria, has a stretch of golden sand and a wealth of hotels, shops, bars and restaurants. One of the main attractions here is the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus, the cultural centre housing ten concert halls, and home to the Las Palmas Philharmonic Orchestra. Constructed by local architects and designers from natural stone, the building is considered an important piece of modern architecture, and a regular host for operas, concerts and international festivals. On the north side of the city is Playa de las Alcaravaneres, the second largest beach on Gran Canaria, stretching over 1000m along the coastline. Sitting beside Las Palmas harbour, Puerto de la Luz, Playa de las Alcaravaneres is the boating centre of Las Palmas, with the Varadero Sailing Club at one end of the beach, and the upmarket Royal Sailing Club, home to some luxurious yachts, on the other.
