Outdoor Pursuits
La Palma is becoming increasingly popular as a destination for outdoor pursuits such as hiking, horse riding and mountain biking. Terrain such as lush green forests, rugged coastal paths, banana plantations and a still active volcanic interior are available to explore. There is a well developed network of hiking trails which pass through spectacular scenery, quaint rural villages and take in the atmospheric volcanic landscape.

Water sports
Always popular with visitors, water sports are a rewarding, exciting way to spend a holiday and the main beach resort of Los Cancajos has facilities for windsurfing, scuba diving and waterskiing. Fishing trips can be arranged in resort or simply spend time relaxing with a book on the long stretch of lava sand beach which is often deserted and completely safe for bathing.

Climb a Volcano
No trip to La Palma would seem complete without a visit to the national park at Caldera de Taburiente which contains the largest volcanic crater in the world, measuring over 5 miles in diameter. Here are found striking volcanic rock formations and together with a ring of surrounding mountain peaks, offer stunning, unique scenery.

Whale and Dolphin Watching
One of the most enjoyable activities available and especially attractive to children is a dolphin or whale watching cruise. Glass bottom boats depart from the port of Tazacorte, skirting the dramatic La Palma coastline before venturing into deep water and a close encounter with playful dolphins or a majestic whale. This is extremely popular with visitors and makes for an unmissable photo opportunity.

Day Trip To Santa Cruz
The island capital of Santa Cruz is a pleasant day out from the beach with prime examples of colonial architecture along its pretty tree-lined streets and a slow, gentle pace of life. There are many cobbled, winding streets filled with small craft shops and charming cafes in which to pass the time or look for the Museo de Historia, which is housed in an ancient monastery and contains many local art treasures.

Caves
In recent years La Palma has become a mecca for enthusiasts of the sport of potholing or spelunking with an extensive network of caves running throughout this small island. The area around Villa de Mazo offers perhaps the best opportunities with long, volcanic tubes and underground reservoirs containing an amazing array of fauna. For the less adventurous, the caves at Cueva Belmocoa have intricate prehistoric cave engravings and should not be missed.
