La Palma, in the northwest of the Canaries, is a quiet peaceful island, and one of the most scenic in the archipelago. A world away from the brash commercialism of some of its’ neighbours, the atmosphere on La Palma is much gentler, with the emphasis on its’ natural beauty and traditional Canarian way of life. Known as ‘La Isla Bonita’, La Palma offers a stunningly diverse array of landscapes, ranging from mountainous volcanoes and rugged craters, to lavish tropical greenery, banana plantations and thriving vineyards.
Holidays in La Palma - Famed for its’ volcanic beaches
The two main tourist destinations of La Palma are Los Cancajos in the east, and Puerto Naos in the west. Both offer fine lava sandy beaches, with plenty of watersports on the beach at Los Cancajos, and a wide selection of accommodation options. The most developed resort on La Palma, Los Cancajos offers the liveliest nightlife on the island, which is still very low-key when compared to other islands. Puerto Naos is perhaps the sunniest resort on La Palma, an original fishing village boasting the longest beach on the island, a stretch of black sand running for 500m along the coastline. On the most southern most tip of La Palma is the town of Fuencaliente, the heavily volcanic region, home to seven volcanoes, the most recent of which, Teneguia, erupted in 1971. This area is the major wine-producing area on La Palma, and another popular scuba-diving haunt. The capital of La Palma, Santa Cruz, is a colonial city with a lively port, and its’ charming palm-tree lined streets contain a wealth of well-preserved 16th century architecture. Santa Cruz is a rich cultural city, housing some impressive art collections, and interesting museums.

The island of La Palma offers a relatively unpoilt destination ideal for nature-lovers and those in search of some true relaxation. The island holds the record for the largest volcanic crater in the world, the Caldera de Taburiente, and a trip to the National Park where it is located is a must. Other wonderful natural attractions on La Palma include the valley of Los Tilos, a primeval laurel forest, and the Cueva Belmacoa, the cave containing prehistoric engravings. Activities to enjoy whilst holidaying on La Palma include mountain biking, walking, hiking, paragliding, horse-riding and bird-watching.
