Stretching from Port Edward in the south up to Mozambique in the north, Kwazulu-Natal is a region of immense diversity, encompassing areas of interest ranging from the bustling cosmopolitan city of Durban, to the historic Zulu battlefields. Holidays in Kwazulu-Natal - A diverse and beautiful province in South Africa
Sitting on the Indian Ocean, Kwazulu-Natal offers a spectacular stretch of 700km of glorious sandy beaches, such as Margate, Shelly Beach, Umhlanga and Ballito, the warm waters offering safe swimming conditions, and surfing possibilities up and down the coastline. The major city in Kwazulu-Natal is Durban, Africas' busiest port, and a thriving industrial, commercial and tourist centre. Here, the beachfront is lined with luxury hotels (Durban is known as South Africas' Miami Beach) and the harbour is the hub of the city, with its' numerous vibrant bars and cafes, and inviting array of international restaurants. Durban is a true melting-pot, with an exciting mix of cultures, featuring Colonial architecture, traditional Zulu markets and a strong Asian influence, in the form of the largest Indian community outside of India. In the north of Kwazulu-Natal is the regions' big game country, including the largest reserve in the area, the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park, famous for its' conservation efforts involving the white rhino, and home of the Big Five - rhino, elephant, leopard, cape buffalo and lion. Also in the north of Kwazulu-Natal is the Greater St. Lucia Wetlands Park - featuring lakes, marshes, forests and swamps filled with protected wildlife species and terrain - an eco-tourist area declared a World Heritage Site in 2000. The other World Heritage Site in Kwazulu-Nata is located in the west of the province - the Ukhahlamba Park in the Drakensberg Mountains - the highest mountain range in South Africa. Referred to by the Zulus as the 'Barrier of Spears', or 'Dragon Mountain', the vast Drakensberg region is an area of spectacular natural beauty and scenery, encompassing dramatic peaks and gorges, massive cliff-faces, cascading waterfalls and rolling green hillsides, perfect for walks and hikes, and offering a wealth of accommodation options. The Drakensberg Mountains are also home to an impressive collection of 3,500 Bushman paintings, done by the San People dating back 2,400 years. Another popular area in Kwazulu-Natal to visit is Zululand, located in the centre of the region - the scene of many turbulent wars in past centuries, most famous for the huge battles between the Zulus and both the Boers and the British.
